Waiting and Working
It would be a mistake to think that the 120 people who were following Jesus' instructions to wait in Jerusalem were doing nothing. There was important activity taking place in Acts 1.
The activity we have seen that these followers were involved in was in being 'devoted to praying in unity (Acts 1:14).' They surely were praying in unity and expectation about Jesus' promise that they would receive the gift of The Holy Spirit as well as power to be witnesses (Acts 1:8). They might have been praying about what this power of The Holy Spirit and witness was going to be and how it might change their lives. This devotion to prayer likely was how they would be prepared to receive this great promise of power and witness.
The prayers of these followers may have also been with great anticipation about the gift of The Holy Spirit. These people are observant Jews and knew something about The Holy Spirit. In Jewish thought and teaching The presence of The Holy Spirit is a sign of the Age of The Messiah and His rule over Israel. What a time to pray if they are to be recipients of The Holy Spirit and be present at the Age of The Messiah. Wow!
Now Acts 1:6 has shown that these followers are thinking about the restoration of The Kingdom to Israel. They knew that the restoration of The Kingdom to Israel would include the Age of The Messiah and the sign of The Holy Spirit. This correlation of The Holy Spirit and the Age of The Messiah must have been thrilling to consider and that they would be part of the great age. What a time to be in prayer together.
REFLECT: How would our prayer lives be "fueled" if we realized that we ARE in The Age of The Messiah as we experience the presence of The Holy Spirit? How about giving thanks to God for being born and living in the Age of The Messiah!!!
