More truth about The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit as "helper" (parakletos) is a fundamental truth of Jesus' teaching here in John 14. But Jesus reveals other truths about The Holy Spirit that are necessary for those on The Path to Pentecost.
Another necessary truth is that The Holy Spirit is "the Spirit of Truth (vs. 17)." This identification or appellation of The Holy Spirit gives insight into The Spirit's nature. The Holy Spirit is about truth and this truth is surely about God and human nature.. This fact about truth is why Jesus says that "the world cannot receive (vs. 17) the Spirit."
The world cannot "receive" this spirit of truth because the world in John is a system or values that are opposed to God and His Spirit. The world is not interested in the spirit of truth, especially the truth about God, ourselves, or our need for Jesus. The world and its opposition to truth is throughout the Gospel of John.
The great issue here is are we "open" to the idea of The Holy Spirit being our helper AND the spirit of truth who reveals truth to our lives? It is likely easy for us to want The Holy Spirit to be our helper in life and difficulty but more challenging to bear with The Holy Spirit as He brings truth to bear in our lives.
REFLECT: How open are your to having the Spirit be truthful about your life? How can we all be more open to this aspect of The Holy Spirit's work?
