Another Feature of What Being Filled with The Holy Spirit is like
The Apostle Paul has exhorted his readers to be filled (under the influence) with The Holy Spirit in Ephesians 5:18. He then follows the exhortation with specific ways to live this life of being filled with The Holy Spirit.
The 3rd participle, that indicates how to live filled, is "giving thanks, always and for everything to God the father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." This practice of giving thanks is characterized as thanks that can be made "in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." I believe that this thanks "for everything" must not be some categorical thanks. I do not think that being filled with The Spirit calls forth thanks for cancer, job loss, a divorce, etc. What makes sense of the context is to give thanks for "for everything" that Paul has enumerated in the Book of Ephesians.
Paul knows that The Holy Spirit would prompt one to give thanks to God for all "everything" that Jesus has done that to this point in the Book of Ephesians that has been enumerated. Paul began the book by declaring that "God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing (1:3)." Here is the "everything" of giving thanks that The Holy Spirit inspires for those living filled (under The Spirit's influence).
This giving of thanks is not only here as a specific way to live under the influence of The Holy Spirit but throughout the New Testament as Spirit living. In I Thessalonians 5:18 there is the giving of thanks "in all things." In Colossians 4:2 we are told to keep alert in prayer by thanksgiving. And Philippians 4:6ff we are exhorted to 'not worry about anything but in everything by prayer...with thanksgiving let our requests be made know to God.'
This constant theme of thanks is The Spirit filled life as we live under The Spirit's influence to give thanks for all//everything God had provided for us.
