Path To Pentecost (19)--May 17

May 18, 2025

The action associated with being filled with The Holy Spirit in Ephesians 5:18ff now moves to the action of "submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ". Th basic idea of submitting is that of subordinating one's desires in view of another. It is not to cease having desires or opinions it is simply subordinating or surrendering one's ideas or desires for a greater good. This greater good is "in reverence to Christ.

So, what is the nature of this submission? I think that Paul's view is that submission to one another, as an expression of reverence to Christ, This seems so because the work of the Holy Spirit is always to make much of Jesus (John 16:14). Submission to one another is to think of Christ first and my opinions second or last. When Christ is first then any thoughts or ideas I have will be submitted to Him and thereby submitting these ideas and desires to others.

But Paul is no mystic. Submission because of reverence for Christ must find practical expression. One might say they have reverence for Christ and are really difficult to get along with because their ideas or opinions are only what they think is valid. This would not be the kind of reverence for Christ that would be a life filled with The Holy Spirit (under the influence).

A life filled with The Holy Spirit (under the influence) will exhibit a life of reverence to Christ that makes us less self-centerd in our thoughts and behavior and more Christ-centered. This is surely because of our reverence for all that Christ has done for us as seen in the previous chapters of Ephesians.

REFLECT: I want to suggest that we consider that being filled with The Holy Spirit enables us to surrender our preferences to honor and reverence Christ? A life filled with The Holy Spirit (under the influence) would be the life of a person who does not always have to get his/her way.
