Supernatural and Natural

November 6, 2025

In the last blog the story of Philip (Acts 8) reveals supernatural guidance and what appears to be supernatural transport. One cannot read this story and not be moved to some degree about God's supernatual action in the conversion of this leader from Ethiopia.

But one should not miss, in the midst of all this supernatural experience (angel and The Holy Spirit), that a very natural matter also happened. A very natural thing occurs.

Philip having been directed supernaturally to join this man's chariot asks a question: "do you understand what you are reading?" Think of this. Philip is just asking a common question about what this man is reading. This simple question begins the process of this man being a follower of Jesus.

Do we, at times, think that ministry is always about supernatural matters? Or, do we, at times, think that ministry is always about natural matters. The fact of this incident in Acts 8 seems to suggest that it is both. Philip is surely directed supernaturally to meet this man but the interaction sees very natural by simply asking of a question.

This reminds me of the ministry of Jesus who asked questions of those who heard him or challenged him. He knew the power of questions as a natural way of engaging people. I would also suggest that questions also can "make room" for the supernatural work of The Holy Spirit. So Jesus' ministry and the ministry of Philip have both supernatural and natural elements

REFLECT: Is your ministry perhaps limited by emphasizing one of these 2 (supernatural and natural)? What role do questions have in your interaction with people?
