This Saturday (September 28) marks the anniversary of John Wesley being ordained to the Anglican Church (Church of England) in 1728. That was 296 years ago. I doubt that he nor anyone else at the moment would have any idea of what a monumental event this ordination would turn out to be.
This entry into the ordained ministry and its subsequent events in his life and ministry continue to have effects to this day. His life and ministry are extended all over the world in different iterations of The Methodist Church. His organizational skills are a model of how to help people grow in faith through the employment of intentional small groups. His works, letters, sermons and correspondence continue to engage many to study how God used this man. His entry to ministry has caused the work of Christ to go all over the world, not the leas of having come to America.
Wesley would live his life faithful to his vows taken in that chapel of Christ's Church @ Oxford on what would have been considered an un-eventful day. But God has a way of using common events that appear uneventful and makes them monumental.
REFLECT: Can you look back on your life and realize that what did not appear monumental has in fact been such in your life? Can you pause and thank God for what appeared rather unimportant at the time but has proven to be very important in your life? Rejoice in God's work in your life
