Not Everyone is Happy

Not everyone is happy

With the apostles appointing leaders to take care of the daily distribution of food to the widows it would appear that things are now back in order. In addition Luke tells us that a man named Stephen is going "great wonders and signs among the people."

One would think that this new community and these "wonders and signs" would have everyone in awe and joy. But that is not the case. There are religious leaders who are in great opposition to this new community. This opposition has been previously seen and is recorded in Acts 5 and now in Acts 6. Both episodes of opposition lead to arrest (Acts 4) and the death of Stephen (Acts 6) is because of their performing "wonders and signs" (Acts 5:12 & Acts 6:8).

What a curious thing to happen as people see obvious "signs and wonders." Wouldn't you think that these signs and wonders would give pause to the religious leaders and their opposition to these people? Apparently not! The religious leaders seem to be unable to be humble enough to consider that God is doing something here.

These religious leaders seem to have rejected the humble counsel of Gamaliel (Acts5:34ff). He said that they should practice a "wait and see" attitude about all these happenings because if it is NOT from God it will fail and if it IS from God yo will find yourself opposing God.

Maybe Gamaliel's approach to things with which we are not familiar or uncomfortable is a reasonable and humble approach. It is an unhealthy approach to our lives to think God must always operate in ways that we have determined or by our religious tradition. I know this may seem a bit scary but it surely is a humble approach to life.

REFLECT: How have we put God "in a box" as it relates to His work in the world? This is not a call to be gullible; It is a call to be humble and see if what is occurring is in fact God. Take Gamaliel's advice.
